The Toyota Vitz RS was launched in 2005. It is powered by a 1.5 L 4-cylinder VVT-i engine rated at 107 bhp (80 kW) and 140 N⋅m (103 lbf⋅ft). The RS features 16-inch alloy wheels, an RS-badged mesh grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, updated tail lamps, deep side skirts, and a tail spoiler. It also includes sports-tuned steering and suspension, along with rear disc brakes.
The Vitz RS was sold in the North American market equipped with the base 1.5-litre engine, and in European markets as the Yaris TS. It was first showcased at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Similar to the previous T-Sport, it features additional rear reflectors on the bumper. Essentially, it is a Japanese-market Vitz RS fitted with a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FE engine rated at 130 hp (97 kW) and 173 N⋅m (128 lb⋅ft), capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 10 seconds.
For the 2007 model year (Japan only), G-BOOK, a subscription-based telematics service, was available as an option. The facelifted Vitz RS/Yaris TS also served as the foundation for the 2012 Thai-built Yaris facelift.
Toyota redesigned the Vitz in early 2005, with sales beginning in Japan that February. While the previous generation Vitz hatchback and Platz sedan shared a very similar look and feel, the redesigned XP90 Vitz and Belta became more distinct in appearance. Although they share the same platform, including the frame and drivetrain components, their exterior bodywork and interior designs differ. The Vitz was designed at Toyota’s European ED2 design studios, while the Belta was developed in Japan.
Markets in Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico received the second-generation Vitz toward the end of 2005. In Australia and North America, the car was marketed under the Yaris nameplate for the first time, while the Belta was sold as the Yaris sedan. The U.S. market version debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006. The XP90 series Yaris was manufactured in Japan, France, Thailand, China, and Taiwan.
The previous 1.0-litre 4-cylinder VVT-i engine was replaced with a 3-cylinder unit also used in the Toyota Aygo. The 1.3-litre engine received a slight power increase, and the 1.4 D-4D diesel engine gained a boost to 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp), improving fuel efficiency. In early 2009, the European market introduced a 1.33-litre engine with Stop & Start technology. The Yaris became the first car in its class to offer nine airbags.
A minor facelift in 2009 brought subtle updates, including revised bumpers with integrated cornering protectors, air dams, and orange-tinted signals in the tail lamps. Between 2011 and 2013, Daihatsu sold a rebadged version of the five-door XP90 Yaris in Europe as the Daihatsu Charade, produced in Thailand with a 1.3-litre engine and available with a six-speed manual or optional automatic transmission.
The XP90 series Yaris continued production in China and Thailand until it was replaced by the XP150 model in November 2013. Physics by VR Driving. Factory Colors.
