When the FIA Group B era began, all previous Group 4 cars quickly became outdated, forcing manufacturers to develop entirely new vehicles to meet the more flexible regulations. At that time, Lancia was competing with the Stratos, which was replaced in 1982 by the 037 Rally. Lightweight and highly agile, the 037 achieved remarkable success by winning the 1983 World Championship, as well as the European and Italian titles.
However, Audi was rapidly advancing its revolutionary all-wheel-drive system, making it increasingly difficult for rear-wheel-drive cars to remain competitive by 1984. As a result, Lancia and other manufacturers shifted their focus to developing all-wheel-drive prototypes. Lancia and Peugeot, in particular, created mid-engine machines that would go on to battle intensely, often overshadowing Audi’s front-heavy designs.
Lancia introduced the S4 (Sovralimentata, 4WD), essentially an evolution of the 037. It featured similar suspension geometry but incorporated a new lightweight spaceframe built from alloy and composite materials, along with a completely new all-wheel-drive system and powertrain. The S4 also brought several innovative technologies, many of which were patented by Lancia.
Among these innovations was an advanced AWD system using a transfer case to distribute torque asymmetrically between the axles. Even more notable was the twin-charging system, combining a supercharger and a turbocharger. The compressor provided boost at low to mid engine speeds, while the turbocharger took over at higher RPMs. Once the turbo was fully spooled, the supercharger was bypassed pneumatically, ensuring maximum efficiency without the typical losses at high engine speeds.
The S4 made its official debut at the Algarve Rally in Portugal on October 31, 1985. At that time, Lancia had not yet completed the required 200 road-going “Stradale” units needed for homologation. The FIA allowed early participation, although it remains uncertain whether all 200 units were ever produced.
Between 1985 and 1986, Lancia and its competitors continued pushing the limits of rally performance, introducing advancements in tire compounds, aerodynamics, and overall engineering. These innovations significantly increased both the speed and the danger of Group B rally cars, marking one of the most iconic and intense eras in motorsport history.
