The original Audi C5 RS 6 Quattro (Typ 4B) was the top-of-the-line model of the Volkswagen Group C5 platform (1997-2004), and was initially available as a five-door, five-seat Avant - Audi’s name for an estate or station wagon. A four-door, five-seat saloon/sedan followed shortly after the launch of the Avant. Derived from the Audi C5 S6 (itself based on the Audi C5 A6), the RS 6 also shares the aluminium structure from the firewall forward with the C5 A6 models equipped with V8 engines (A6 4.2 V8 Quattro, S6 saloon/Avant). It was manufactured from July 2002 through to September 2004.
Official performance figures for the Avant, when using the recommended high-octane 98 RON "Super Plus" unleaded petrol, indicate a 0–100 km/h (62.1 mph) time of 4.6 seconds, reaching 200 km/h (124.3 mph) in 22.8 seconds (22.6 seconds for the saloon). Official figures state an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph), although many RS owners report that the limiter is quite lenient, with real-world limited speeds of around 270 km/h (167.8 mph) being achievable. Using lower octane fuel, such as standard 95 RON unleaded, reduces engine power and overall performance.
Luggage capacity, measured according to the VDA standard, ranges from 455 litres to 1,590 litres in the Avant with the rear seats folded. The saloon version offers a boot capacity of 424 litres.
For the C5 RS 6 powertrain, the engine is an all-aluminium 4,172 cc (4.2-litre) twin-turbocharged ("biturbo") V8 with double overhead camshafts and five valves per cylinder. Developed by quattro GmbH and Cosworth Technology (now MAHLE Powertrain), it produces 331 kW (450 PS / 444 bhp) and 580 Nm of torque. The twin-turbo setup delivers a broad power band, with peak torque available from 1,950 to 5,600 rpm.
The engine features fully sequential multi-point fuel injection, a mapped direct ignition system with individual coils, and Bosch Motronic ME 7.1.1 engine management. It complies with Euro 3 emissions standards and includes catalytic converters and oxygen sensors for precise control. CO₂ emissions are rated at 350 g/km.
The RS 6 uses a five-speed ZF 5HP24A Tiptronic automatic transmission with a lock-up torque converter and adaptive “Dynamic Shift Programme” (DSP), which adjusts shifting based on driving style. Manual control is available via the gear lever or steering wheel paddles.
Power is delivered through Audi’s Torsen-based Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system, which automatically distributes torque between the front and rear axles. The system includes Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) and Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) for improved traction and stability.
The suspension features a fully independent setup with a lowered ride height, stiffer springs, and increased damping. The RS 6 introduced Audi’s Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), a mechanical system that adjusts damping forces during cornering, acceleration, and braking to reduce body roll and improve handling.
Braking performance is handled by Brembo 8-piston front calipers with large ventilated and drilled discs, while the rear uses single-piston calipers. The car also includes Bosch ESP with ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist.
Three OEM wheel and tyre options were available, including standard 19-inch wheels in most markets and 18-inch options, along with a dedicated winter package.
